EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTH AMERICA
Chile- Saturday, February 27, 2010

An earthquake happened in Chile, South America. The earthquake, one of the country's largest in 25 years with a 8.8 magnitude, struck at about 634 GMT, 91km north-east of the city of Concepcion and 317km south-west of the capital, Santiago. The president of the country, Michele Bachelet, affirmed that about 6 people were killed and many left homeless as buildings collapsed. There was even a tsunami set off by the massive earthquake. Even phone lines and electricity were down and the extent of the damage is difficult to estimate and determined. In response to the earthquake, president Bachelet ordered the people to remain calm and if ever they needed help, to contact the authorities. She also said that they are currently trying to find out the effects of the quake around the world. Crustal movements linked to the event are the downward land movements and horizontal crustal motion.
To minimize the damage of such events, I think the government should organize an earthquake drill occasionally so that when there is an earthquake, people would not get all flustered and panicky and they will be in order so they can evacuate the place effectively and safely, thus less people will be sacrificed.
